Pole, Pedal, Pant Winter Triathlon Race

Pole Pedal Pant Winter Triathlon Race (venue change from Giants Ridge), 10K ski, 10K mountain bike, 5K run. Equalizing starts; elite and age groups. Food, drinks, awards, door prizes, etc. Sponsored by Rainbow Resort (Waubun, MN).
34 racers (23 individuals, 3 men teams, 1 co-ed team) participated in the 2nd annual Pole Pedal Pant Winter Triathlon Event. The race used a women vs. men equalizing format with women racers started 15 minutes earlier than the men and team racers.
The overall women winner, Jan Guenther, clinched the overall race title with a winning time of 1:29:19, which is 1 minute 12 second ahead of the run up men winner, Pete Hanson (1:30:31 and actual time of 1:15:31).

The morning of the race (race start at 2:30pm) had a few rain drizzles. By noon, the weather turned to be cloudy and then turned sunny by the end of the race. The temp. was near perfect, around mid to high 20s, little wind. The skiing portion (10K freestyle) of the race was relatively faster than last year, the bike portion (10K mountain bike) was a battle for most of the racers. The road was covered with a mix of ice and gravel/mud. The run course was faster than last year as this year's course was all on the road instead of a portion of it on the lake at the last year's race.
Thanks to all the participants and volunteers. It was a blast, and a fun transition to spring training for most of the skiers, runners, cyclists, and triathletes. Music and local TV media (Channel 14, Fox Sports News program) coverage made the entire race another memorable annual event.
Next year's race (the 3rd annual event) will be held on March 11, 2007, Sunday, at Rainbow Resort, Waubun, MN (www.rainbowresort.com). Equalizing race format will be used. A fun kid's race and a winter triathlon seminar program will be added to next year's event.
